Sanctuary in Puerto Iguazu
Wednesday, September 21, 2005
The air hangs heavy with moisture; the sun beats down hot. The surrounding jungle encroaches on the small city of only 30,000. Across one river Brazil stares back at us. Across another is Paraguay. It is quiet, beautiful and we have a pool. Life is good in Puerto Iguazu, which for the next two days is paradise.
Our very short stay here is mainly to see the famous Iguazu Falls. We booked this part of the trip through a Buenos Aires travel agent and got a great package deal. Tomorrow we’ll be part of a small group touring the falls by foot and boat. We were told flat out that we’re going to get wet...very wet. We can’t wait. These falls are not the tallest, but they are the most powerful in all of South America and we’re excited to see them up close and personal. Our hotel here is radically different from the hostel we’ve been at in Buenos Aires. We have a mini bar (which will go unused). We have a hammock that swings in the breeze on our own veranda (which will be used). There’s also a great pool (this will be used as soon as we sign off here). The bar is adjacent to the pool (this will also be well used) and a small restaurant just a few steps away (sure to be used at some point, if we have the energy to get out of the pool). This is a luxury we don’t get much when we travel, so we;re going to take advantage of it in every way. In two days we’ll leave this place for the arid Andes and who knows what that will be like.
Sorry for the short entry, but the cool waters of our pool (which overlooks the peaceful waters of the Parana River) are calling and we just have to obey.
Talk to you tomorrow after we dry off.
