Not Much to Say in Salta
Saturday, September 24, 2005
We don’t really have a lot to say. It was a chilly and drizzly day in Salta so we did things like laundry and napping. Yesterday was beautiful and hot. We took the gondola up to the top of a mountain...well, we thought it looked like a mountain until we got to the top. The city view showed us a spectacular site. Salta is surrounded by the Andes, only you can’t really see that from town because there were several brush fires burning outside of town. From our bird’s eye perch, they looked like controlled burns. At sunset however, the surrounding mountains took on every shade of purple and blue. Simply stunning. The plan was to get up early and go back to get the morning view, which would have shed more light on them but, alas, the weather didn’t cooperate. We were going to check with a few travel agents about trips to the surrounding areas. After talking it over, however, we decided it is much cheaper if we just get on a bus and head north. First thing in the morning we have a 2 hour ride to Jujuy, then another 3 to Humahuaca. This route takes us along the Quebrada de Humahuaca (Humahuace Canyon), which is a World Heritage Site. While the town of Humahuaca is the biggest in the area at 6,000 people, we don«t know what there will be for internet service. Between Jujuy and Humahuaca are several small villages (in the 400-600 people range) that we’ll also visit.
So, if you don’t hear from us for a few days you know where we are. Picture in your mind traditional Andean life, alpacas, llamas, ponchos, huge mountain, colorful and serrated valleys, etc. That’s where we’ll be. When we get back (or before if there’s Internet service) we’ll let you know if that’s what it’s really like!
Until then,
The Boys
